On Thursday, November 2, Energy Transfer (ET) discovered an earth feature (sinkhole) during their routine maintenance on their right of way between the Amtrak railroad tracks and the Rt. 30 bypass in West Whiteland Township.
The earth feature is a subsidence, which is common in this area given the karst geology. The feature is 9 feet x 9 feet in diameter and 4 feet deep. ET had a professional geologist out on site on Thursday after the feature was discovered. It was recommended to backfill the feature with modified soil, compacting the area and seeding the impacted area. There are no pipelines or utilities exposed and there is no threat to public safety.
The subsidence is fenced off. The area will be physically monitored until it is remediated. ET is working with Amtrak on access to the site and remediation work will be completed on Monday, November 6.
